Ink Edge Placemat

Nila’s ‘Ink Edge’ placemat is made from banana fibre, handwoven into an intricate lattice pattern and finished with a border dipped in indigo, giving the piece a striking, inky blue outline. Made entirely of natural materials and handmade processes, the placemat is a beautiful and sustainable addition to a table setting. 

The Ink Edge placemat has been woven by the women associated with The Kishkinda Trust in Anegudi, located along the Tungabhadra river in Karnataka. Whilst the region has an abundance of semi-tropical flora and fauna, the skills of weaving with natural fibres like Banana and river grass are relatively new to the region. The Kishkinda Trust saw an opportunity to generate livelihoods through the rich natural resources available and has since worked closely with communities in Anegudi to promote natural fibre-based crafts. This has been a particularly valuable source of economic empowerment for the women in the area, who work from their homes, seamlessly weaving their craft practices with the multitude of roles they are expected to take on.
